Topography Map Made with 10 Layers

The map is made out of 10 layers of birch plywood stained in a gradient, framed in oak, and topped off with a custom cut piece of glass. The terrain contour was made out of an aggregation of data from several online databases in order to get a high detail map of the area overlaid with local roads.

The piece was made as a homage to my grandfather, who turned 90 years old, and is displaying Nordby farm in Trysil, Norway. As an addition, I made an aluminium version to celebrate my father’s 60th birthday. This was cut to size, brushed on one side and sanded on the back, before laser etched and coated.

FABRICATION

All 10 layers were laser etched, cut, sanded, stained, and finished
The layers were cut out of full sheets in order to align them perfectly when assembled
